How Bernstein's Argument On The ''What does music mean?'' Video Can Be Related to Our Discussions?
When I watch the ''What does music mean?'' video, I noticed that our discussions on the studio is like as in the video. Bernstein explains music in a questioning manner. What i mean by saying questioning manner, he is talking about something than he asking a question about that. In the beginning of this semester, this method was hard for me. Because i always learnd what they told me. I did not question it. I was just listening and it was it. But now i have to think, i have to learn it by myself. Our teachers trying to teach us this. There was something on the video that caught my attention. Bernstein gave so many example about what he is talking about. In studio, we are giving so many examples while we are discussing something. I think it is a better way to learn something or understand it easily. Or our teachers teach us piece by piece. And they ask us to do something by putting these pieces together. Bernstein did that to in the video.
In the video Bernstein said, ''There are millions of reasons why music if fun. But it is all musical reasons.'' For me, this sentence might be use for our studio too. We explain things on the studio, but we are learning to do it by using just architecture things like words, objects, photos..
ORNAMENT and AUSTERITY
Original Text
Loos(1908) states that ornament is a symptom of backwardness. He was questioning ''Every epoch had its own style, so why don't we have our own style?''. I think we have our own style and he thinks that too bu some people are acting like we are still in the fifteenth or els. century. These people who lag behind are slowing down the cultural development of the nations and of humanity, he says. Also he thinks that ornament is not a source of increased plesure in life. That leads us to the name of the book; Ornament and Crime. He strongly defends that ornament is a crime in economic respects. Because it leads to the waste of human labor, money and materials. Decoration makes objects more expensive. Also the producing phase of decorated objects are taking three times as long. And there is ''aesthetic''. Because of aesthetic, some people are refurnish their apartment every ten years. It means wasted materials. He says that '' If all objects would last as long in aesthetic terms as they last phsically, the consumer would be able to pay a price for them that would allow the worker to eran more money and work shorter hours.''. From this sentence, we can say thath ornament is also means wasted labor and therefore wasted health. So, the main idea he is trying to tell us is, ornament can no longer be produced by someone living on the cultural level of today.
Reflective Text
Banham(1957) discusses the historical background and emergence of the idea that modern architecture should be undecorated. He defends that we should this need to be examined within the framework of some individuals. When we look at the whole text, we see that Banham agrees Loos. He says t the young architects adopted his idea and it made him popular. But this popularity also made him forgotten. Anyway, the general idea of this text is the important role of Loos in assimilate this idea.
